Here's a quick painting of my nana using magenta and french ultramarine. I think the magenta gives the skin tones a nicer warmth than straight red might have, thought still needs some playing around with the colours. 🎨🖌️

Another self portrait to add to the pile. This time I started with a magenta sketch working directly onto a dry canvas. Unusual for me, I painted my shadows in straight from the tube lamp black. I think with this altered palette it worked pretty well. Next time I think I'll try a bigger painting in the same colours. 🎨🖌️

Just a collection of some of my works over the last month or so.

I've really ramped up production when it comes to art this year. I've never made so much in such a short amount of time, even when I was at uni! I'm not sure exactly what's changed, but I feel like over the past year and a bit, I've really felt the urge to create more than ever. Let's hope this continues! 🎨🖌️

Returning to my street portraits once again, here'

Returning to my street portraits once again, here's a recent painting of Newcastle Central Metro station.

If ever there were a place for people to congregate, it would be on a platform, waiting for the last train home. With the cramped environment of an underground platform, the crowds squeeze together, becoming more unified as a mass. Here I brought back my red outline, much thicker than usual, to cut through the cold and dark of the surrounding platform and to offer a guiding line around the crowds.

I wasn't quite sure of the direction of this when I first started, but it found it's way to a finished painting somehow. 🎨🖌️

I wanted to try something a bit different this tim

I wanted to try something a bit different this time. Usually, I'd paint on canvas or paper, but I was messing around clearing up my palette the other day when I realised it feels quite nice to paint on wood. It's a harder and less absorbent surface which seems to let you scrub the paint in without washing out the colour.

I didn't have any painting boards, but I do have a bunch of offcuts from my shelves which are conveniently sized and shaped. Not sure how long the paintings themselves will last, I didn't go through my usual process of priming, and preparing, so I'm a bit concerned it might start to break down eventually. Either way, I really enjoyed how I could sculpt around the thick paint, definitely worth further experimentation! 🎨🖌️

I figured it was time for another of my urban figu

I figured it was time for another of my urban figure paintings, but this time with a bit of a shift to my palette and technique.

I usually paint pretty large paintings, so this one was quite a bit of a challenge. When you paint smaller I feel like the mistakes are amplified, so you need to be much more considerate with your brushstrokes. While I like loose and expressive paintings, I struggled to make this one feel exactly how I wanted. Who knows, lemme know what you think? 🎨🖌️

I haven't mentioned yet, but I'm currently attending a short printmaking course up in Edinburgh. I've been wanting to boost my confidence in printmaking for a while now and this course has been great!

I had to leave the dry point session early to run off to an opening, so today I caught up by finishing off a few designs. I have to admit, I'm really enjoying the process, it's so different to my usual practice. I ended up using an orange juice carton that I finished for the skull and snail designs. Can't wait to see how they look once they're printed! 💀🐌

Page 5 of my sketchbook project and I'm on to a magenta page. Magenta is a great colour, it's so vibrant, almost to the point of unnatural, and offers some lovely options for choice of colour palette.

Chalks seemed like a good option for this. I knew I wanted to let some of the magenta break through, and the translucent, powdery nature of chalks offered the chance to let that happen without losing clarity of the colour.

Overall I'm pretty pleased, although I wish I'd taped up the edges so I could end with a nice clean edge to the drawing. Perhaps next time! ✏️

Probably the largest charcoal drawing I've made this year at just about a metre tall. There are so many little details though, I wanted to draw each person within the crowd, but that was almost an impossible task.

I'm once again bringing together train stations and crowds, seemingly a staple of my practice at the moment, but this one was too good an opportunity to miss. A little while ago they were filming a certain piano-based TV show at central station in Newcastle, and it seemed everyone was stopping to listen. I didn't have the chance to stop for as long as I might have liked, but I snapped a few good pictures to hopefully work from.

I don't have the biggest studio, and for whatever reason I've got paper which is almost bigger than it is! I ended up having to staple it to the wall, just to prevent it from curling while I worked. It's a nightmare to photograph in my studio as well, but somehow I managed. 🎹🖊️

It's very convenient making a self portrait. You have more freedom and control over the final outcome than you might when creating a portrait of others, but it offers a few challenges which are unique to self portraiture. We're so used to seeing ourselves reflect in a mirror, that working from reference can seem odd, like it's not quite yourself, even though logically you know it must be. Then following that is expression, how do you express artistic intent without it seeming forced.

Now it feels I've created more self portraits over the last two months than I think I've made over the last ten years!

I finished this pile of skulls painting just in time for Halloween! 💀

I feel like the skull is one of those classic subjects within art, the kind of thing you find as a central subject within a still life or alongside the main figure of a portrait.

I couldn't say why that is exactly, but I know they're a fun challenge to paint, and a pile of them is doubly so. Maybe next time I'll paint something a little more cheery though 💀🎨🖌️
