A Rainy Evening in Chamonix

Oil on canvas
2024

At the base of Mont Blanc is the town of Chamonix. When I visited in December 2023 it was lovely, covered in snow and bustling with life. This was made only better by the quaint, bright red cog-wheel train up to the top of the mountain. Returning to the town it had started to grow late, the sun was going down and the weather had turned. The picturesque snowy town was now quickly becoming drenched with the sudden downpour and running with the grey runoff of rain-melted snow.

Despite this, on our journey back to the bus station, the darkness and rain gave the town a new feeling. The streetlights glittered against the rain-covered streets, and high above what little light was remaining cast a glow over the peak of Mount Blanc.

In A Rainy Evening in Chamonix, I tried to capture the mixed feeling being awestruck by natural and manmade beauty mixed with the feeling that perhaps I was under cover somewhere less wet.

This painting was included in my first solo exhibition Like Ships in the Night.
