Descending
Charcoal on paper
2024
The escalators at South Shields Interchange are a narrow corridor surrounded by metro tiles.
As I slowly descend, I can’t help but focus on the figures ahead of me and the people weaving in and out of the automatic doors below. There’s something claustrophobic about it, but in a way, that forces me to observe those around me.
Recreating this in charcoal, I can’t help but get the sense of the movement below, as their bodies lose shape and grow blurred from their walking. The figure ahead is almost static, becoming part of the fixtures. Rigid like a statue on the moving escalator.
This drawing was included in my first solo exhibition Like Ships in the Night.
