Glitter
Oil on canvas board
2023
I created Glitter on the third week of AAL’s ‘Responding to Images of the Body’ elective. The week’s theme was on the concept of rematerialising the body and the materiality of paint.
At the time I wasn’t entirely certain what that even really meant. I had played around with different ways of applying paint before, but I hadn’t thought about it in terms of considering the body as a material itself.
In the news earlier that week was a ‘glitter-bombing’ of then leader of the opposition and now (as of October 2024) prime minister, Keir Starmer. There was something fascinating about the way this man ran on stage, grabbed ahold of the politician, and then showered him with (mostly) harmless glitter. It was almost magical in its mania.
I knew I had to paint it, so I did.
