Memento Mori I
Oil on canvas
2024
Memento Mori I is a still life of a large number of closely placed skulls. The skulls, from deceased Cretan monks at the Agia Triada Monastery, were carefully placed within a number of cabinets within a small room on the outer wall of the monastery. Though initially a gruesome sight, their placement and care shown for them felt more like a celebration of life, rather than a capturing of death. Here is my own attempt at a Memento Mori – an artwork symbolising the fragility of life and a reminder of mortality.
