Polly

Oil on canvas
2023

I don’t often paint animal portraits, but when I do they are usually dogs.

This painting depicts my mum’s labrador Polly as a puppy. In this, she can be seen lying against the arm of an armchair which is covered in an orange and red throw.

In places on her body, small patches of pale blue can be seen breaking through the beige of her fur, this is especially obvious in her ear. Along the bottom edge of here ear, the orange under-paint has been left showing to contrast against this blue.

The chair itself has grown indistinct due to the relative closeness of the viewer. Only the suggestion of the arm can be seen running vertically on the left side of the painting.
