I had gained a lot of confidence from the development of Break. I had conceptualised my ideas and realised a process that I found both engaging and repeatable, with a choice of colour which I found suited my method very conveniently. 

Portrait of the Physicist was the second independent painting following AAL, and the penultimate painting of 2023. This painting shows my brother in the late hours of Christmas day, reclined on the sofa and deep in conversation with my dad. Small but defining marks of red can be seen drawing along his upraised arm and down one side of his face and neck. These add a welcome sense of warmth and a contrast against the green undertones of the painting.

Behind the subject are indistinct lights and shapes of the kitchen and dining room behind.
