Seaham Car Boot Sale
Oil on canvas
2024
Every Sunday, just north of the town of Seaburn, is the weekly car boot sale, considered one of the largest in the country.
When I went there in summer 2024 the weather was perfect. It was warm and the sun was shining brightly, casting brilliant shadows of the many people in the crowd.
Painting Seaham Car Boot Sale, I stumbled upon the idea of using oil pastels within my base sketch. Used in the right way, they blend out from their initial lines into these lovely washed pools. Working on top of these with thick layers of oil paint I was able to create a clean distinction between washed shadow and solid ground. Continuing this tonal thinking, I rendered the figures, trees and vehicles in red.
This painting was included in my first solo exhibition Like Ships in the Night.
