Just finished another new style crowd painting, this time based on a visit to a Christmas market in Montreux.

I'm not entirely sure about the background colour, I think it's a little off, but I really like how the blue/green shadow combos came out. 🎨🖌️

Tan paper is really lovely to work on, especially with oil pastels! Messing around with oil pastels recently has really helped me refine the colours I want to use in my painting palette. I've still got most of this tan sketchbook left, so I think I'll be drawing a few more oil pastels portraits soon. 🎨🖌️

It's been a while since I've tried a self portrait

It's been a while since I've tried a self portrait from life, and it never gets any easier!

I had quite a bit of paint left on my palette after finishing the recent long shadow painting of Edinburgh and didn't want to waste it. That's probably why the colours are a bit wilder than usual. 🎨🖌️

I thought it might be interesting to take my stree

I thought it might be interesting to take my street portraits in a different direction, for a little while at least. I've always enjoyed those long shadows you get when the sun is low and bright in the sky. This painting comes from a photo I took in Edinburgh in November last year when all I could see was the sun and the shadows. 🎨🖌️

Back on with printmaking with my newest lino print

Back on with printmaking with my newest lino print on Newcastle platform 4 facing Newcastle castle. There were lots of fiddly little bits, especially around the frame of the arch, but overall I think it came out pretty well. At the very least, it was a good excuse to use my new baren! 🚂🏰

Recently, I've got into the habit of making oil pa

Recently, I've got into the habit of making oil pastel studies before working on my larger paintings. I find it particularly useful to draw these on tan or coloured backgrounds, I think so I can better tell where I want my highlights to be, rather than letting the white of the paper decide for me.

The more of these that I make, the more I'm enjoying just the process of quickly working with oil pastels and thinking about colour. Unlike pencil, when you use oil pastels, you're kind of stuck with whatever marks you make, so through the process I can feel my markmaking becoming more confident.

Just finished my first painting of February with a portrait of my Grandma. I originally painted this last year on a much smaller scale with watercolours, but wanted to give it another go with oils instead. I'm pretty pleased with it, though perhaps the shadows could have been a bit darker. 🎨🖌️

Happy new year! New year, new painting! My first

Happy new year! New year, new painting!

My first piece of the year is based on a photo taken on Christmas eve, with my nana and my newest niece. I really wanted to push the boat out with this so I overhaulled my colour palette, bringing in some exciting new colours and putting aside some old favourites. I'm excited to see how the rest of this year is going to go! 🎨🖌️
