Tsukiji Outer Market

Oil on canvas
2024

This street painting shows a cramped and lively back alley within the famous Tsukiji Outer Market in Tokyo, Japan. Here, a seemingly unending crowd of people navigates past one another as they stop to buy food from the long rows of street stalls.

Tsukiji Outer Market is the first of my new urban paintings and represents a substantial change in my style.

Here I have begun to implement more graphic markmaking within my work, which is especially obvious in the figure in yellow on the lower left.

A print of this painting was included in my first solo exhibition Like Ships in the Night. Simultaneously, the original painting was exhibiting in Skipton Town Hall as part of Yorkshire’s Emerging Artists Exhibition.
