Filling the Stairs

Oil on canvas
2024

This street painting shows a tightly confined stairwell within the heart of Jiufen in Taiwan. Here the crowds can be seen ascending and descending the stairs. Within the stairs various character can be seen that showcase the diverse interactions of the area. A central figure in a pink hat looks directly at the viewer. Further up the stairs, an elderly courier can be seen clutching a box to his back. At the top of the stairs, a man illuminated in white clothes stares down the stairs towards the figures at the bottom with an expression that is hard to decipher

The painting makes use of a graphic red outline, to draw attention to these varied characters and create a separation between figure and scene.

This painting was included in my first solo exhibition Like Ships in the Night in 2024 and exhibited in a year-long exhibition in London as part of the Macfarlanes Art Prize from 2025-2026.
