Night Market
Oil on canvas
2024
The back streets of Taipei, Taiwan are seemingly filled with endless alleys which come alive at night with light, sounds, and smells. In these night markets, you can find the most unexpected things, and some of the tastiest, freshly-cooked food I’ve ever sampled. When others are sleeping the people of the night market seem to come to life.
In this painting, we are stood at the entrance of a night market. The large red gate beckons us into a corridor filled with light. A crowd is gathered around the entrance, perusing shops and stalls. In the lower right, a man wearing a black and red jumper is walking casually towards the crowd. in the lower centre of the centre, a moped carrying a large parcel is being driven into a gap in the crowd by a figure wearing a shiny red helmet.
This painting was included in my first solo exhibition Like Ships in the Night.
