Platform 4
Charcoal and chalk on paper
2024
Over the past few years I have found myself at a number of train stations, and by connection on a number of platforms. I find it interesting to see how people behave while waiting for a train. There’s the semblance of polite queueing which almost immediately seems to go out the window as soon as the train arrives, at which point it becomes every person for themself.
Standing at platform 4 in Newcastle, looking to your left you can see an oddly-placed bit of history. Immediately as you leave, after the car park, you can see Newcastle Castle just sitting there. Even though the castle considerably outdates the train station, it always feels to me that it was placed there as a small oddity to catch curious viewers. A relic of an older time to contrast against the glowing orange screens above.
This drawing was included in my first solo exhibition Like Ships in the Night.
