Self Portrait in Umber is a quick self-portrait primarily using burnt umber.
Here I used straight-from-the-tube burnt umber as my darkest point of the painting and worked upwards to my highlighting white through the transitory tones of cadmium red and cadmium yellow.
The mark-making within the piece is thick and unblinded, leaving red colours butted up together to create the illusion of a strong light glowing hotly against my face.
